摘要: Because of social and possibly biological influences, a number of differences, i.e., gender, exist in approaches to learning a second/foreign language. EFL students vary in their perceptual learning style preferences. These differences influence classroom dynamics and student success (Oxford, 1995). In order to better understand the factors that shape the language learning process and to help design curriculum and instruction for classroom practice for higher achievement and increased motivation for learning, this study was to explore and compare what current differences exist in preferred learning styles of Taiwanese traditional and adult EFL junior college students based on the characteristics of gender, age, and years of learning EFL experience.
The instrument used to gather the data of 209 traditional and adult EFL junior colleges students from five randomly selected schools in Taiwan was Dr. Reid's Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire. Traditional EFL students who
learned English in longer period demonstrated significant differences for tactile, kinesthetic, and group learning style preferences than those who learned EFL shorter. Male traditionals expressed a significantly stronger preference in auditory learning style than females. Tactile and group learning style preferences were found significantly different among the adult EFL students of different age.
I tests for independent means revealed significant differences in learning style preferences among traditional and adult EFL students based on gender. A series of one-way analyses of variance demonstrated significant differences in learning style preferences ( p < .05 ) among traditional and adult EFL students based on age and years of learning EFL experience.
